Jazz guitar
Welcome to the Jazz Guitar studio at the University of Colorado Boulder College of Music!
This studio is led by Tim Wendel and includes BM, MM and DMA students. At all levels, students develop and maintain a solid foundation for all aspects of playing jazz guitar—including technique, ear training and the achievement of a full and personalized sound that reflects each student‘s musical journey. With this work comes the development of the student’s own knowledge of jazz guitar pedagogy. Through a personalized repertoire of jazz tunes, the studio explores all aspects of improvisation—including melodic, harmonic and rhythmic concepts. Emphasis is placed on developing an individual sound and diverse music styles are also incorporated, including blues, world music, funk and classical repertoire according to each student’s interests. Students will have a wide range of performance opportunities to implement all of these concepts and pursuits into practice.
Many great guitarists have visited the studio—including Bill Frisell, John Scofield, Ben Monder, Johnathon Kreisberg, Gilad Hekselman, Rez Abbasi, Brad Shepik and others.

Tim Wendel is a versatile guitarist, composer, producer and educator. He began his musical career by immersing himself in the Philadelphia jazz scene where he was an accomplished leader and sideman for 10 years. Now residing in Colorado, Wendel regularly tours nationally and internationally—both as a sideman and with his own creative projects. When not performing, he is an in-demand producer and mixing engineer. In 2022, Wendel released his debut album “Westward You.” His performing and recording credits include a number of modern jazz luminaries such as Art Lande, Dave King, Shane Endsley, Adam Benjamin and Ron Miles among others.
