Transport of Radioactive Materials on Campus

Radioactive materials and/or radiation-producing machines may be transferred to another appropriately licensed laboratory following approval from the CU Radiation Safety Office. Once approval from the CU Radiation Safety Office has been arranged, laboratory personnel may be given permission to move the materials from one laboratory to another in the same building, with secure packaging and proper secondary containment to avoid spills. The CU Radiation Safety Office transports and ships all radioactive materials between buildings on campus or to other institutions to ensure all applicable regulations are followed.

Shipping Radioactive Materials Off-Campus

Periodically, laboratories may wish to send radioactive materials off-campus to a collaborator at another institution, or for use at a field location. Radioactive materials are not to be shipped off-campus without authorization and prior approval of the CU Radiation Safety Office. Field location use must be pre-authorized through the CU Radiation Safety Committee and may involve approval from state and federal regulatory agencies.

To send material off-campus, the user should contact the CU Radiation Safety Office, who will address the radiation packaging and follow shipping requirements. The Radiation Safety Office will request information on the name/address of the sender and receiver, Federal Express (or other shipper) account number or speed type to recharge, and any special instructions. Contact the CU Radiation Safety Office to pick up the material for shipment.

In many cases, authorization and additional paperwork for state and federal regulatory agencies is necessary before material can be shipped. Please plan accordingly for lengthy delays in shipment of the material while this authorization is obtained.Ìý This is especially true for international shipments. The laboratory wishing to ship the material is responsible for payment of all shipping costs.

Departmental shipping managers should to be in contact with the Radiation Safety Office to assist with the shipment of radioactive materials. The campus Office of Export Controls may also need to be involved. Laboratory personnel are responsible for notifying all affected entities of the shipment.

All incoming radioactive material should be shipped to:
