Colorado's primary election is Tuesday, June 30. Primaries determine which candidates each political party will place on the November general election ballot.

This year, the Democratic, Republican, Unity and Libertarian parties are holding primaries. You must be registered with one of these parties or as unaffiliated to participate. Registered party members will receive only their party’s ballot.

Unaffiliated voters were mailed both major party ballots (Democratic and Republican). They may vote and return only one. Unaffiliated voters can also choose to vote in either the Libertarian or Unity party primary, but additional steps are required. Visit Boulder County Elections' unaffiliated voter FAQ page for details.

Voting and returning your ballot

Ballots were mailed to eligible voters on June 8. If you did not receive your ballot, you can vote in person at a vote center. It is too late to have your ballot mailed to you.

Vote centers are open now through Election Day (closed Sunday). You can vote in person, register and vote on the same day, request a replacement ballot and more. The closest vote center to campus is located at 1750 33rd St., near Arapahoe.

If you still have your mail ballot, please return it to any 24‑hour drop box. It is too late to return ballots by mail. Ballots must be received or returned to a drop box by 7 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, June 30. You may return your ballot to any drop box in Colorado (for example, a Denver ballot returned in Boulder will be delivered to Denver for counting).

Interested voters can sign up for ballot processing center tours on Monday, June 29. Students are especially encouraged to attend.

Get outside

Catch a sunset at Lost Gulch Overlook

Located off Flagstaff Road southwest of Boulder, the Lost Gulch Overlook is one of the most scenic spots along the Flatirons. Watching the sunset (or sunrise, if you want to wake up nice and early) along the mountains will take your breath away.

Bike the Boulder Creek Path

Whether you're looking for a leisurely ride or a new way to explore the city, the Boulder Creek Path offers miles of paved trail winding through Boulder. Follow the creek as you pass parks, open space and some of the city's most scenic views.

Bonus adventure: Rocky Mountain National Park

It's not in Boulder, but Rocky Mountain National Park is well worth the drive. Just over an hour away, one of the country's most iconic national parks offers alpine lakes, mountain views, wildlife watching and miles of hiking trails.

Bring your own bike or rent one nearby, then set out for an afternoon ride along one of Boulder’s most popular pathways. Don't forget: CU Boulder students and employees can take advantage of a free Boulder BCycle membership.

Hike to the Royal Arch

If hiking is your style, the Royal Arch trail is a must. The trailhead is accessible from Chautauqua Park, but know that this popular trail is quite rugged with steep steps, making it a moderate to difficult hike. Once you reach the Royal Arch itself—a natural stone arch surrounded by trees and a panoramic view of the Rocky Mountains—you'll understand why this trail is a Boulder favorite.

Pack a picnic for North Boulder Park

The grassy expanse in North Boulder Park is the perfect spot to relax on a cool summer evening. Spend an hour or two people watching, enjoying a delicious picnic dinner and taking in the Flatirons views with friends.

Need some picnic recommendations? Stop by Snarf’s, Le Frigo or the Boulder Farmer’s Market.

Sunbathe on Farrand Field

This is a classic activity among CU Boulder students—bring a blanket, some snacks and your homework and spend some of the afternoon soaking up the sun on CU Boulder's Farrand Field.

Cool off

Take a dip in the Buff Pool

Cool off at one of campus's most unique summer amenities: the Buff Pool. The outdoor pool features bubble benches, a lounge chair sunbathing shelf, water volleyball and basketball, plus plenty of space to relax on the surrounding patio.

Enjoy Boulder Creek at Eben G. Fine Park

When temperatures rise, few places are more popular than Eben G. Fine Park. Located along Boulder Creek, the park is a favorite spot for wading in the water, relaxing in the shade and spending time with friends. Pack a picnic, bring a book and enjoy one of Boulder’s quintessential summer hangouts—you might even spot tubers floating by.

Spend a day at Boulder Reservoir

With a sandy beach, designated swimming area and stunning views of the Flatirons, Boulder Reservoir is one of the city's top summer destinations. Spend the day swimming, sunbathing or playing in the water.

Paddleboards, kayaks and other watercraft are available to rent onsite. Park entry fee applies.

Beat the heat indoors

Visit Fiske Planetarium

CU Boulder's Fiske Planetarium offers fulldome star shows, music laser shows featuring your favorite artists, NASA events, eclipse viewing parties and more. In the summertime, you can catch a matinee on Thursday afternoons. Plus, be sure to explore Fiske's exhibits before or after a show.

See a Friday Night Weird film at the Dairy Arts Center

The Dairy Arts Center hosts a weekly program to spotlight the best in new and classic films, especially from marginalized voices. Catch a Friday Night Weird film and expand your cinematographic horizons. Plus, student tickets are only $11.

Play games at the Media Archaeology Lab

Did you know CU Boulder has a Media Archaeology Lab, home to classic games and gaming consoles? Located on the northwest side of campus, swing by to take a look at “vintage” technology and maybe play a game on the original Nintendo Entertainment System console from 1985.

Be sure to review the lab's hours before visiting.

Tour the Celestial Seasonings Factory

Celestials Seasonings, known for their delicious teas, is based in Boulder. Factory visitors can partake in a fun and informative tour of the facility and taste test a variety of tea. Even if you aren’t interested in the tour, the tea bar and gift shop are open to everyone.

Eat, drink and shop local

Shop the Boulder Farmers Market

A summer staple, the Boulder Farmers Market is the perfect place to spend a Saturday morning. Browse fresh produce, baked goods, flowers and locally made products while enjoying live music and a vibrant atmosphere. It's one of the best places to experience Boulder’s local flavor.

Peruse Boulder Bookstore

Boulder Bookstore has been a Pearl Street staple since 1973. This massive literary hub is filled to the brim with books, informative staff, author events, book clubs and more. Spend a couple hours selecting your next read, then maybe take it with you to North Boulder Park for that picnic.

Attend the Colorado Shakespeare Festival

Enjoy live theater under the Colorado sky at CU Boulder's historic Mary Rippon Outdoor Theatre. The Colorado Shakespeare Festival is one of the longest-running programs on campus and the second-longest-running Shakespeare festival in the nation. It's a quintessential Boulder summer experience.

Get tickets for the 2026 season, featuring: "Twelfth Night" with a "Downton Abbey twist," a modern take on "Julius Caesar," a stage adaptation of the Oscar-winning film "Shakespeare in Love" and the world premiere comedy "Friends/Romans/Countrymen."

Dance at Bands on the Bricks

One of Boulder’s favorite summer traditions, Bands on the Bricks brings live music, dancing and community to Pearl Street on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer. Grab dinner downtown, gather with friends and enjoy performances from local and regional bands as the sun sets over the Flatirons.

Stargaze at Sommers-Bausch Observatory

Located next to Fiske Planetarium, the Sommers-Bausch Observatory hosts free public open houses on select Friday evenings throughout the summer when the skies are clear. Look through a telescope on the observing deck and be immersed in Boulder’s starry skies.

More than 700 ideas. That’s how many students, faculty, staff and community members across CU Boulder have responded so far to Chancellor Justin Schwartz’s call to help shape the university’s future.

Launched during Schwartz’s 2026 State of the Campus address, the Big Ideas initiative invites the campus community to submit bold, forward-looking ideas to guide CU Boulder’s next era of societal impact. The initiative comes as the university celebrates its 150th anniversary—a moment Schwartz described as both a celebration of the past and an opportunity to imagine what comes next.

“When you invite a community to think boldly, and give people a path to act, they will answer the call,” Schwartz said during the address. “This is just the beginning.”

A campuswide effort

The Big Ideas initiative is supported by a 12-member working group of faculty and staff who bring a range of academic, professional and lived experiences to the process. The group is reviewing submissions to determine which ideas should move forward for leadership consideration.

The working group is co-chaired by Waleed Abdalati, director of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences and professor of geography, and Stefanie Johnson, professor of organizational leadership and information analytics and director of the Center for Leadership.

Rather than seeking fully developed proposals, the initiative is intentionally focused on imagination—asking contributors to put forward ideas that are ambitious, meaningful and potentially transformative.

What the campus is saying

As submissions have rolled in, several themes have begun to emerge—offering insight into what community members care about most, where friction exists and where possibility feels within reach.

One of the most common themes centers on teaching, curriculum and learning. Many ideas focus on rethinking degree pathways, expanding interdisciplinary curricula and embedding career readiness and real-world skills more directly into academic programs. Together, these ideas point to a desire for a more integrated, applied and future-facing learning experience.

Another strong area of interest is artificial intelligence, data and digital transformation. Contributors across disciplines are asking how CU Boulder can lead in shaping an AI-driven world. Ideas range from new research centers to practical improvements such as upgraded digital infrastructure and smarter student systems. AI-related ideas span education, research and creative work, and operations.

Research, institutes and innovation also feature prominently. Many submissions call for cross-disciplinary collaborations and bold investments in areas such as space, climate and sustainability.

“There is a clear appetite to double down on CU Boulder’s identity as a public research powerhouse,” Abdalati said, “and to amplify that identity further on the national and global stage.”

Focus on students, affordability and well-being

Ideas related to student experience also emerge frequently, particularly around career readiness, internships and workforce development. The volume of these submissions suggests students are seeking clearer pathways from education to impact, Johnson noted.

Affordability and access appear repeatedly as well, with contributors raising ideas related to tuition, financial transparency and basic needs such as housing and food security.

Health and well-being, especially mental health, represents another significant area of focus.

“The volume of ideas underscores that mental health and well-being are central to student success, faculty effectiveness and the overall functioning of the institution,” Johnson said.

Submissions addressing infrastructure and campus experience—including housing, transportation, space utilization and even the overall feel of campus—also surface often.

“These ideas range from practical to imaginative,” Johnson said, “but they all point to the same thing: the physical and operational environment matters more than we sometimes acknowledge.”

Woven throughout many of the themes is a focus on accessibility, equity and belonging, reflecting a consistent push to make the university more inclusive by design and in outcomes, Abdalati noted.

What comes next

The Big Ideas working group is currently reviewing submissions with the goal of identifying concepts with the greatest potential for lasting impact.

Selected ideas will be shared back with the campus community in future rounds of engagement, creating opportunities for feedback, collaboration and refinement. They also will be credited to the individual or team who proposed them, and students, faculty and staff whose ideas advance will have opportunities to remain involved as those ideas take shape.

“This next phase matters,” Abdalati said. “It opens the door for people to raise their hands and say, ‘I want to be part of this.’”

Over the summer, promising ideas will move into incubators—small, focused groups that will begin turning concepts into more concrete proposals. In the fall, the university plans to move into action on selected ideas while launching the next round of Big Ideas submissions.

As the initiative continues, campus leaders emphasize that the strength of Big Ideas lies in broad participation.

“Today’s big ideas will shape CU Boulder’s legacy,” Schwartz said. “The ideas are coming from everywhere, and we hope the campus community keeps pushing us to think boldly.”

Colorado’s 2026 primary election day is June 30, and general (midterm) election day is Nov. 3. Professor Elias Sacks, CU Boulder's faculty director for public scholarship, and Student Body Tri-Executive Gianna Guido, both members of CU Boulder’s Election Steering Committee, sat down to discuss why this year’s elections will be important for everyone who lives, works or studies in Colorado.

For those who may not follow Colorado politics closely, what is a primary election and what's at stake on June 30?

Sacks: A primary election is how each political party selects the candidate who will represent them in the November general election. On June 30, Colorado voters will choose nominees for major offices, including Governor, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, and key state races. Whoever wins the primary becomes that party's candidate in the fall.

What major races are on the June 30 primary ballot?

Guido: The June 30 primary includes competitive races for Colorado Governor, where incumbent Governor Jared Polis is term-limited, opening up that office. Additionally, one U.S. Senate seat will be open, and all eight U.S. House seats. There is also a race for the CU Board of Regents District 2 seat, which includes Boulder County. The board governs CU's budget, sets university policy and makes other decisions for our campus.

All voters registered in Colorado will receive their ballots by mail. Deadlines for returning ballots via mail will be stated in the ballot packet. Or, voters can drop their ballots off before the deadlines at CU Boulder’s 24-hour ballot drop boxes, located on the south side of the University Memorial Center and the west side of Williams Village.

There's no presidential race in 2026. Why should people care about a primary for a midterm election?

Sacks: Midterm elections, and the primaries that feed into them, often determine the balance of power, for years to come, in Congress and in state government.

In Colorado, decisions about higher education funding, housing, healthcare and environmental policy are shaped by those who control the state legislature and governor's office. These are decisions that also affect CU's budget, faculty and staff working conditions and the communities our students will enter after graduation.

Can independent voters participate in the primary election?

Sacks: Yes, Independents (i.e., unaffiliated voters) may vote in the June primary election by casting a ballot for one political party. Voters affiliated with a major or minor party may cast a ballot for candidates of that party.

What are the key dates and deadlines that voters need to know?

Sacks: Key right now is the primary election on Tuesday, June 30. Ballots must be received by 7 p.m. (MST) on that day.

One of Colorado's great strengths is that there is no voter registration deadline; you can register to vote through Election Day. However, if you need your ballot mailed to you, you must register online by June 22. After that date, you can still register online, but you must visit a Vote Center in person to request a ballot.

Guido: I encourage everyone to register sooner rather than later to reduce last-minute stress. If you're already registered, double-check that your address is current, especially if you moved during the past year. Go to govotecolorado.gov. Don't assume you're all set if you haven't checked recently.

Colorado is a vote-by-mail state. How does that process work? What options do students have for returning ballots?

Guido: Every registered Colorado voter automatically receives a mail ballot before each election. Students should make sure their registered address reflects where they are currently living to ensure their ballot is mailed to the right place.

You can return ballots by mail, drop them in a ballot drop box or vote in person at a Voter Service and Polling Center. There is a 24-hour drop box at the University Memorial Center and on the west side of Williams Village, which is available for all elections.

What if a student has moved recently or is originally from another state—how do they make sure they're voting in the right place?

Guido: Students have a choice; they can register to vote at their Colorado address and participate in Colorado elections, or they can maintain their registration in their home state and vote there by mail. The important thing is not to be registered in two places simultaneously. Register where you’d like your vote to count.

What is your message to any student, faculty or staff member who is thinking about sitting this primary out?

Sacks: I understand potential fatigue. There are a lot of elections, and this one arrives in the middle of summer; it can also be exhausting to try to keep track of everything going on in American politics right now. But, the decisions made in the June primary will define the choices available in November, and those will shape Colorado's leadership—and our nation’s—for years.

History is full of examples of elections decided by small margins. Your participation is not symbolic; it is consequential. In Colorado, with vote-by-mail and same-day registration, the barriers to voting are as low as they have ever been. There’s no good logistical reason to sit this one out.

Guido: I'll add that this is your community too. Whether you've been in Boulder for one semester or 10 years, the people elected in this primary will make decisions that affect your tuition, your housing, your safety and your future. So, let's make sure the energy is here on June 30!

Stand Up for Climate Comedy

The 11th annual Stand Up for Climate comedy event brings together professional comedians and CU students celebrating the power of humor in driving climate awareness and action. Headlining the night is Chuck Nice, joined by professional comedians Brittany Bell Surratt and Katie Hannigan. The evening will also feature brief stand-up and sketch performances by students from CU Boulder’s Creative Climate Communication course. Musical accompaniment by Milo Trout.

Native Spring Foraging: Outdoor Adventures
