Primaries determine which candidates each political party will place on the November general election ballot.</span></p><p><span>This year, the Democratic, Republican, Unity and Libertarian parties are holding primaries. You must be registered with one of these parties or as unaffiliated to participate. Registered party members will receive only their party’s ballot.</span></p><p><span>Unaffiliated voters were mailed both major party ballots (Democratic and Republican). They may vote and return only one. Unaffiliated voters can also choose to vote in either the Libertarian or Unity party primary, but additional steps are required. It is too late to have your ballot mailed to you.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Vote centers are open now through Election Day (closed Sunday). The group is reviewing submissions to determine which ideas should move forward for leadership consideration.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>The working group is co-chaired by Waleed Abdalati, director of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences and professor of geography, and Stefanie Johnson, professor of organizational leadership and information analytics and director of the Center for Leadership.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Rather than seeking fully developed proposals, the initiative is intentionally focused on imagination—asking contributors to put forward ideas that are ambitious, meaningful and potentially transformative.</span></p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="ucb-article-content ucb-striped-content"> <div class="container"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--article-content paragraph--view-mode--default 3"> <div class="ucb-article-row-subrow row"> <div class="ucb-article-text col-lg d-flex align-items-center" itemprop="articleBody"> <div><h2><span>What the campus is saying</span></h2><p dir="ltr"><span>As submissions have rolled in, several themes have begun to emerge—offering insight into what community members care about most, where friction exists and where possibility feels within reach.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>One of the most common themes centers on teaching, curriculum and learning. Many ideas focus on rethinking degree pathways, expanding interdisciplinary curricula and embedding career readiness and real-world skills more directly into academic programs. Together, these ideas point to a desire for a more integrated, applied and future-facing learning experience.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Another strong area of interest is artificial intelligence, data and digital transformation. Contributors across disciplines are asking how CU Boulder can lead in shaping an AI-driven world. Ideas range from new research centers to practical improvements such as upgraded digital infrastructure and smarter student systems. AI-related ideas span education, research and creative work, and operations.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Research, institutes and innovation also feature prominently. The volume of these submissions suggests students are seeking clearer pathways from education to impact, Johnson noted.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Affordability and access appear repeatedly as well, with contributors raising ideas related to tuition, financial transparency and basic needs such as housing and food security.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Health and well-being, especially mental health, represents another significant area of focus.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>“The volume of ideas underscores that mental health and well-being are central to student success, faculty effectiveness and the overall functioning of the institution,” Johnson said.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Submissions addressing infrastructure and campus experience—including housing, transportation, space utilization and even the overall feel of campus—also surface often.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>“These ideas range from practical to imaginative,” Johnson said, “but they all point to the same thing: the physical and operational environment matters more than we sometimes acknowledge.”</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Woven throughout many of the themes is a focus on accessibility, equity and belonging, reflecting a consistent push to make the university more inclusive by design and in outcomes, Abdalati noted.</span></p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="ucb-article-content ucb-striped-content"> <div class="container"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--article-content paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="ucb-article-text" itemprop="articleBody"> <div><h2><span>What comes next</span></h2><p dir="ltr"><span>The Big Ideas working group is currently reviewing submissions with the goal of identifying concepts with the greatest potential for lasting impact.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Selected ideas will be shared back with the campus community in future rounds of engagement, creating opportunities for feedback, collaboration and refinement. They also will be credited to the individual or team who proposed them, and students, faculty and staff whose ideas advance will have opportunities to remain involved as those ideas take shape.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>“This next phase matters,” Abdalati said. “It opens the door for people to raise their hands and say, ‘I want to be part of this.’”</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Over the summer, promising ideas will move into incubators—small, focused groups that will begin turning concepts into more concrete proposals. On June 30, Colorado voters will choose nominees for major offices, including Governor, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, and key state races. Whoever wins the primary becomes that party's candidate in the fall.</span></p></div><div><h2><span lang="EN-US">What major races are on the June 30 primary ballot?</span><span>&nbsp;</span></h2></div><div><p><span lang="EN-US"><strong>Guido: </strong>The June 30 primary includes competitive races for Colorado Governor, where incumbent Governor Jared Polis is term-limited, opening up that office. Additionally, one U.S. Senate seat will be open, and all eight U.S. House seats. There is also a race for the CU Board of Regents District 2 seat, which includes Boulder County. Why should people care about a primary for a midterm election?&nbsp;&nbsp;</span><span>&nbsp;</span></h2><p><span lang="EN-US"><strong>Sacks: </strong>Midterm elections, and the primaries that feed into them, often determine the balance of power, for years to come, in Congress and in state government.&nbsp;</span><span>&nbsp;</span></p></div><div><p><span lang="EN-US">In Colorado, decisions about higher education funding, housing, healthcare and environmental policy are shaped by those who control the state legislature and governor's office. These are decisions that also affect CU's budget, faculty and staff working conditions and the communities our students will enter after graduation.</span><span> &nbsp;</span></p></div><div><h2><span lang="EN-US">Can independent voters participate in the primary election?&nbsp;</span><span>&nbsp;</span></h2></div><div><p lang="EN-US"><span lang="EN-US"><strong>Sacks: </strong>Yes, Independents (i.e., unaffiliated voters) may vote in the June primary election by casting a ballot for one political party. Voters affiliated with a major or minor party may cast a ballot for candidates of that party.&nbsp;</span><span>&nbsp;</span></p><h2><span lang="EN-US">What are the key dates and deadlines that voters need to know?</span><span>&nbsp;</span></h2><p><span lang="EN-US"><strong>Sacks: </strong>Key right now is the primary election on Tuesday, June 30. Ballots must be received by 7 p.m. (MST) on that day.&nbsp;</span><span>&nbsp;</span></p><p><span lang="EN-US">One of Colorado's great strengths is that there is no voter registration deadline; you can register to vote through Election Day. However, if you need your ballot mailed to you, you must register online by June 22.&nbsp; After that date, you can still register online, but you must visit a Vote Center in person to request a ballot.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-US"><strong>Guido:</strong> I encourage everyone to register sooner rather than later to reduce last-minute stress. If you're already registered, double-check that your address is current, especially if you moved during the past year. Go to </span><a href="https://www.coloradosos.gov/voter/pages/pub/home.xhtml" rel="nofollow"><span lang="EN-US">govotecolorado.gov</span></a><span lang="EN-US">. Don't assume you're all set if you haven't checked recently.</span><span>&nbsp;</span></p><h2><span lang="EN-US">Colorado is a vote-by-mail state. How does that process work? What options do students have for returning ballots?</span><span>&nbsp;</span></h2></div><div><p><span lang="EN-US"><strong>Guido: </strong>Every registered Colorado voter automatically receives a mail ballot before each election. Students should make sure their registered address reflects where they are currently living to ensure their ballot is mailed to the right place.</span><span>&nbsp;</span></p></div><div><p><span lang="EN-US">You can return ballots by mail, drop them in a ballot drop box or vote in person at a Voter Service and Polling Center. There is a 24-hour drop box at the University Memorial Center and on the west side of Williams Village, which is available for all elections.&nbsp;</span><span>&nbsp;</span></p></div><div><h2><span lang="EN-US">What if a student has moved recently or is originally from another state—how do they make sure they're voting in the right place?</span><span>&nbsp;</span></h2></div><div><p><span lang="EN-US"><strong>Guido: </strong>Students have a choice; they can register to vote at their Colorado address and participate in Colorado elections, or they can maintain their registration in their home state and vote there by mail. The important thing is not to be registered in two places simultaneously. Register where you’d like your vote to count.&nbsp;</span><span>&nbsp;</span></p></div><div><h2><span lang="EN-US">What is your message to any student, faculty or staff member who is thinking about sitting this primary out?</span><span>&nbsp;</span></h2></div><div><p><span lang="EN-US"><strong>Sacks:</strong> I understand potential fatigue. There are a lot of elections, and this one arrives in the middle of summer; it can also be exhausting to try to keep track of everything going on in American politics right now.
