Master’s degree in music theory

Students in the master’s degree in music theory engage creatively and critically with music and theory about it. They interact with work in performance, composition, musicology, ethnography, mathematics, cognitive science, new media and more, building upon the interdisciplinary expertise of theory faculty. Skills gained in original research and pedagogy equip students for advanced doctoral study and cognate career paths. Students also benefit from the vibrant and collegial environment of the College of Music with access to centers such as those for musicians’ wellness, entrepreneurship, American music research, and the interdisciplinary ATLAS institute.

Opportunities for TAships

The College of Music offers merit-based aidÌýthrough scholarships and music theory teaching assistantships.ÌýTeaching Assistants (TAs) teach in and assist with undergraduate theory courses.

  • Students applying for the Theory Assistantship will be asked to demonstrate singing, rhythm, and keyboard skills, both at sight and prepared. Please fill outÌýthis applicationÌýto be considered.
