Thirty-two alumni and industry partners – both seasoned and recently graduated – spoke on panels, presented about their career paths and got to know students during the fourth annual Careers in ME Symposium. Over 250 second-year mechanical engineering students attended.
Sara Beck finished her undergraduate degrees at CU Boulder in 2003, double majoring in aerospace engineering sciences and studio arts. After an impressive first job at NASA, she returned to the College of Engineering and Applied Science and earned her PhD in environmental engineering under Professor Karl Linden in 2015. We asked her about her impressive experience in engineering so far, her future plans and what it’s like to ride the Tour de France bike race route.

Six recent graduates in Engineering and Applied Science were commissioned into the United States Navy as brand new ensigns, and all of them will now enter into active duty in various capacities to serve the nation.
The Engineering Center lobby holds fond memories for CU Boulder alumni Ashok Srivastava and Lynn Waelde. The couple met while working on their PhDs – his in electrical engineering, hers in psychology – when a mutual friend directed Waelde to Srivastava for a data analysis problem.

Four undergraduate students studying mechanical engineering worked with senior residents to test out their new invention, an accessory for walkers that the team hopes to make widely available to seniors and others. They believe their device could help prevent debilitating falls. Stride Tech received the first place prize in the New Venture Challenge.
CU Boulder mechanical engineering alumnus Mike Maloney chooses to take risks, try new things, serve others and get things done all while having fun! He began his career as a pilot in the United States Navy and has since founded KOTA Longboards.
