Patty Limerick

Patty Limerick is Professor of History and Environmental Studies, Director of the Applied History Initiative, and Campus Partner for Academic Affairs for Veteran and Military Affairs at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She is the author of Desert Passages, The Legacy of Conquest, Something in the Soil and A Ditch in Time. Limerick has served as President of the American Studies Association, the Western History Association, the Organization of American Historians, and the Society of American Historians. Additionally, she served as Vice President of the Teaching Division of the American Historical Association and as a Member of the National Council on the Humanities. She received a MacArthur Fellowship in 1995 and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2021. Limerick has dedicated her career to bridging the gap between academics and the public and to showing the benefits of applying historical perspectives to contemporary issues. She is just beginning work on a book entitled Out of Order: Hair-Raising Tales of an Academic Renegade, harvesting memories from those years of risky gap-bridging.
