This lecture focuses on the portent of the newborn centaur in Plutarch’s Symposium of the Seven SagesÌý(149c1-f1). A close reading of this little-known passage sheds new light on Plutarch’s creative engagement with the Greek past and reveals his preoccupation with heredity and succession in this work.
