Biography
Tony Tong is Chair of the Strategy, Entrepreneurship, and Operations (SEO) Division and Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the Leeds School of Business. Prior to his current role, he served as Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Research. He holds the Guggenheim Endowed Chair of Business Design and Innovation.
Professor Tong鈥檚 research focuses on firm strategy, innovation management, and international business. His work examines knowledge and innovation, corporate strategy, digital innovation, intellectual property rights, interfirm relationships, and multinational enterprises, often in global and technology-driven contexts. He has published widely in leading journals, including Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, Journal of Economics & Management Strategy, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Nature Scientific Data, Organization Science, Research Policy, Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Organization, and Strategy Science, among others.
Professor Tong鈥檚 interdisciplinary research has received several awards, including the Strategic Management Society Best Paper Prize (2011), the ICIS Best Short Paper Award (2020), and the Journal of Management in Engineering Best Paper Award (2021). He has served as Principal Investigator on several National Science Foundation (NSF) grants and as Commercialization Lead on multiple government-funded projects.
Professor Tong teaches Strategic Management, Global Strategy, International Business, and Technology & Innovation Management across undergraduate, MBA, Executive, and Ph.D. programs. He has received multiple teaching awards from the University of Colorado, Ohio State University, and Purdue University. He has also developed highly-recognized teaching materials, including several 鈥渂estseller鈥 case studies published by Harvard Business Publishing and practitioner-oriented articles on innovation and digital business models in Harvard Business Review. He has mentored many doctoral students, whose dissertations have received the prestigious in Strategic Management at the Academy of Management.
Professor Tong currently serves as Vice President of the Strategy Science Section of INFORMS and previously served as Chair of the Corporate Strategy Interest Group of the Strategic Management Society. He has also served on the Executive Committee of the Strategic Management Division of the Academy of Management and on the editorial boards of many leading journals, including Academy of Management Journal, Global Strategy Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Organization Science, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Organization, Strategy Science.
